How to spring clean your garage in 7 easy steps

Spring is just around the corner and so it is a great time to start preparing your garage for the new season. So here’s our seven easy steps to spring cleaning your garage and making the most of this useful storage space.

A typical garage has plenty of storage space if you put the walls and ceiling to good use. Making it a clean and organised space rather then a dumping ground is certainly something to strive for. The hardest part is probably taking the first step. But if you don’t have the time or inclination to do it yourself, then there are specialists who will come in and declutter for you. Here are some tips to help ‘spring’ you into action this weekend.

1. Prepare

Get your supplies ready. Make sure you have gloves for cleaning, bin bags for rubbish and good sturdy boxes for storing items. And allocate some time to do it!

2. Clear the space

It’s tempting to just do a small area rather than the whole space but our advice would be to clear the whole space if possible. This way you can have a good declutter as well as preparing for step three.

3. Start the cleaning

Work from top to bottom to clean the space. Eliminate cobwebs from the ceiling, walls and corners with longer length dusters and sweep the entire space to get rid of dust and debris. Don’t forget the garage door so make sure to clean inside the door and any track areas.

When it comes to the floor they can get pretty grimy. So once it’s all swept try giving it a clean using a mild floor cleaner to get rid of any stains or marks.

4. Getting rid of unwanted items

You can consider things like Facebook groups, your local charity shop, a car boot sale, ebay or if the item is in bad condition then perhaps a skip or local tip. Its always a good idea to recycle where possible as after all one person’s rubbish is another’s treasure! For items that you aren’t quite sure about it’s worth storing it and reviewing it again in six months time.

5. Now is the time to add in new flooring or racking

If your intention is to upgrade your garage floor or install some shelving then now is the time to do this. Adding in garage floor tiles can make a huge difference to the look and feel of the space. 6. Create ‘zones’

We find it best to organise your garage into zones so you know just where to find that tool, the pet supplies or the roller skates. One idea could be a sports zone for bikes, hockey sticks and gym equipment or perhaps creating a hobby zone with tools all neatly tidied away is more your thing. Whatever your family is in to, you can create a separate zone for each activity.

7. Organise

Now it’s time to put everything back in to your sparkling garage! Using your zones and new racking should help to make it much easier. But if you didn’t opt for this option, you can still be sure it’s going to look a lot better for the time and effort spent.
