How to choose the right storage Cabinet for your garage
Garages have become ‘the’ place where we are most likely to dump all kinds of ‘things’ and as a result it can become cluttered. One of the easiest ways to keep a garage tidy is to use storage cabinets. But how do you choose the one that’s right for you? We look at materials, position, security and organisation to help you decide.
What should your garage storage cabinet be made of?
Storage cabinets can be manufactured using many materials from metal and wood to rubber, plastic and resin. They all have their advantages and disadvantages, but our recommendation would be for either moulded plastic or metal. Both options are manufactured specifically for the garage environment making them hard-wearing and durable.
Moulded Plastic
In addition, the plastic options are easy to keep clean by simply wiping with a damp cloth, it won’t “sweat” and is water resistant ensuring your possessions will remain safe from the elements. If the cabinet does get damaged, you can usually replace one panel rather than the entire cabinet. Our range includes Tall, Wall and Mini cabinets, all of which can be mounted on your garage wall using our FlexiTrack or FlexiPanel. The Tall Cabinet can also be floor mounted if you so wish.
Metal cabinets
Metal versions are also safe for using in the garage and give a premium look to your garage environment. They are floor mounted and include cupboards, workbenches and mobile cabinets. We offer our metal range in a light grey casing but you can choose the top, bottom and front colour. The available colours include Gentian Blue, Light Grey, Crimson Red and Anthracite Grey.
How should you position your garage storage cabinets?
The question is “should the cabinet be floor standing or wall mounted”? Our advice would always be to go for wall mounted cabinets as they are easier to clean underneath and may save your possessions if your garage is prone to flooding or water on the floor. There is also far less chance that a heavy cabinet will topple on to you when it’s secured to the wall.
Is security important to you?
Accidents often take place in the garage, so bear safety in mind when choosing your storage cabinet. Garages are used to store all kinds of dangerous items, from tools to poisons so having a storage cabinet that you can lock gives you peace of mind that those dangerous items are out of the reach from the most vulnerable members of your family.
How can you organise your garage storage cabinet?
Perhaps the most important question to ask is “how you’re going to use your storage cabinets?” but this is also the most difficult question because we often change the way we use our garage, depending on our circumstances. Look for storage cabinets that have flexible organisational accessories e.g. bins that slot onto the inside of the doors, tool racks and modular shelves that you can position wherever you need them and that offer flexibility as and when your requirements change.
Remember, with Garageflex, we can help you choose the right kind of wall or ceiling storage option as well as resin or tile flooring solution. This customer from Bledlow in Buckinghamshire popped into our showroom to enquire about bike storage. We asked what he wanted to achieve and the space he had available. After discussing it in detail, the customer opted for a Vertical Bike Rack which he attached to his wall using our FlexiTrack. Adding in a few brackets, hooks and bins gave him a great bike storage area where everything can be neatly kept together.
